Message: Dear Ellen and family:

Kathy and I express our deepest sympathies in the loss of Gary. His invitation to serve on his staff at both the Wilmore, KY church and later on at Pearce Memorial in North Chili made a profound impact on me early in my ministry. He was a skilled administrator, visionary leader, caring pastor, and one of the greatest preachers I've ever heard. He was a devoted husband and father. His deep Christian faith was contagious, and his faithful service to Christ and the church was inspiring. Kathy and I are so privileged and are better persons for having known Gary, Ellen and the family. May God's blessings and comfort be with all of you in the days ahead.

Love and prayers,
Harold and Kathy Neeley

Message: We were saddened to learn of Gary's sudden passing. He blessed me a number of times, including giving me a tour of Roberts Wesleyan College in 1968. I am grateful I followed his encouragement to attend. A few years later, while I was very early in ministry, he gave wise advise to a number of us young pastors. I was grateful that he let his name stand as a candidate for the Canadian Free Methodist Bishop because I trusted his wisdom to guide the denomination through that very difficult process. He kept calm and was very gracious when people expressed different ideas strongly. Gary and Ellen were a real blessing to my sister and brother-in-law when they were going through a very hard, challenging time. He will be deeply missed by many people.
Love and prayers,

Message: Writing a tribute for my friend, Gary, is something I never thought I would ever find myself doing. Our relationship began in our early teens and I can't remember a cross word between us. During quartet years, college, dating, working at college, marriage, careers, faith: all were shared and known to each other. When this life-long bond ended so suddenly, it was something I did not prepare for.

Gary and Ellen affected my life in so many ways. Our conversations picked up where the last one left off. Gary always had a unique sensibility that he brought to everything that we discussed.

His stimulating career leadership meant our conversations were always meaningful and inspiring. In whatever field Gary was working on at the time, he surrounded himself with the greatest number possible of experts in that field. He also generously leveraged these relationships to benefit his colleagues, team and friends as well. He took pleasure in enriching others and was outstanding in doing so. He stayed current in the lives of mutual friends and showed genuine concern about them. In all these experiences, he was able to synthesize nuggets to share.

Gary was rightly known to cast a far-reaching vision in any leadership responsibility. He also brought creative solutions. Inevitably, at times, these solutions challenged status quo. He was fierce but collegial in leading a team and history will affirm his work. I also know the diligence with which Gary sought to know God's will and the Biblical position. But once there, he went forward with skill, confidence and tenacity. Many of us marveled at the unique and practical way the plans moved forward. He was a catalyst that brought about a lifetime of change.

Gary had retired and now has left us for good. His is a life that challenges the best of all of us. I feel grateful to have been one of his friends and shall live in his debt for the rest of my life.

Esther and I wish Ellen and the family peace and hope among the memories of life together. Amen

Message: Ellen, John, Charles & James: We were so saddened to learn of Gary's death! Just want you to know what a one-of-a-kind human being Gary was. I'll never forget standing on our deck in Wilmore when Gary came to talk to Daryl about moving to North Chili to join the staff at Pearce; that was a wonderful opportunity, and Daryl has always talked about what a great staff that was. Gary always pushed people to be better -- more innovative, more thoughtful, more open. Our prayers are with you as you navigate the days ahead.
