Writing a tribute for my friend, Gary, is something I never thought I would ever find myself doing. Our relationship began in our early teens and I can't remember a cross word between us. During quartet years, college, dating, working at college, marriage, careers, faith: all were shared and known to each other. When this life-long bond ended so suddenly, it was something I did not prepare for.
Gary and Ellen affected my life in so many ways. Our conversations picked up where the last one left off. Gary always had a unique sensibility that he brought to everything that we discussed.
His stimulating career leadership meant our conversations were always meaningful and inspiring. In whatever field Gary was working on at the time, he surrounded himself with the greatest number possible of experts in that field. He also generously leveraged these relationships to benefit his colleagues, team and friends as well. He took pleasure in enriching others and was outstanding in doing so. He stayed current in the lives of mutual friends and showed genuine concern about them. In all these experiences, he was able to synthesize nuggets to share.
Gary was rightly known to cast a far-reaching vision in any leadership responsibility. He also brought creative solutions. Inevitably, at times, these solutions challenged status quo. He was fierce but collegial in leading a team and history will affirm his work. I also know the diligence with which Gary sought to know God's will and the Biblical position. But once there, he went forward with skill, confidence and tenacity. Many of us marveled at the unique and practical way the plans moved forward. He was a catalyst that brought about a lifetime of change.
Gary had retired and now has left us for good. His is a life that challenges the best of all of us. I feel grateful to have been one of his friends and shall live in his debt for the rest of my life.
Esther and I wish Ellen and the family peace and hope among the memories of life together. Amen
