Matthie, Betty

Mrs. Betty June Matthie
April 17 1929 – October 20 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Betty Matthie,
a beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandma, great-grandma and friend.
She was born in Picton, Ontario and spent her entire life in Prince Edward County.

Betty was the cherished only daughter of Sherman and Matilda McQuaid, sister to Leo McQuaid, and a devoted wife to John for 73 years. She was a friend to Melba, Barbara, Marilyn, Judy, Jean, Debbie, Doris, Marilyn, Sue, the late Wanda Hoag and many others.
Betty was immensely proud of her two sons and their families. Craig (Luba) and Barry (Maggie).
Betty was a doting Grandma to Tarrah (Will), Andrina (Matt), Raya (Graydon), Ryan (Sarah) and Ben (Jessi).
Betty loved her twelve great-grandchildren Iyla, Tieje; Sawyer Mashall, Betty; William, Brenna, Lukas, Maeve;
and Hannah, Nora, and Lucy.

If you knew Betty, you know she loved socializing. It was her favourite subject in school and for the rest of her life she created many opportunities for gatherings. She hosted tea parties, dinner parties, and meetings with the Bloomfield United Church Women.
As chair of her United Church Women’s Group, she organized and baked for the many church events.
She was the last surviving member of the Happy Gang.

Her main focus was John, the farm and her family. She helped John and Barry on the farm.
For someone who had never cooked before she married, she became an excellent cook.
Her cakes and pies won first prize at the Picton Fair for decades

Betty reported the West Bloomfield News for the Picton Gazette for many, many years.
Before Facebook was created, we were able to follow the lives of our friends and neighbours through her columns.

Betty’s generosity knew no bounds. Cards were readied on her desk to mail for birthdays, and special occasions.
Gifts were presented to newborns and for birthdays. She participated in the County tradition of delivering food to grieving families.

Betty’s favourite day was Friday or Hair Day. She put on her latest colourful outfit and completed her errands, delivered eggs
and met friends for lunch at Miss Lilies.  Debbie’s appointment was the end to a perfect day.

The family wishes to thank the Staff at West Lake Terrace for their excellent care and kindnesses to Betty.

Please help us celebrate her wonderful life at the Bloomfield United Church
on Friday, Hair Day, November 8th, 2024.
Service is at 11:30. Visitation from 10:30 until time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Betty’s memory to the Bloomfield United Church Memorial Fund
or Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Back the Build Fund.
