Message: I had the honour, and it was an honour, to practise law with Kees for 26 years, first at Templeman Brady and then at Hicks Morley. He was my mentor, friend and partner. Many have already commented on his humanity in relation to those with whom he dealt, powerful or weak, rich or poor. He was completely unpretentious and humble, despite his significant intelligence and success as a lawyer. It is noteworthy, but not surprising, that some of the remembrances on this site come from opposing counsel and union representatives. He adored his family, Diane and the three boys. He made a tremendous contribution to labour law in Eastern Ontario and provincially. It is comforting to know that he is at peace with Diane forever. We will miss him.

Message:
WE are thankful for the friendship Kees gave and for the strength and peace he brought.

We are thankful for the love he offered and received while he was with us on earth.

We pray that nothing good in Kees’s life will be lost, but will be of benefit to the world; that all that was important to him will be respected by those who follow; and that everything in which he was great will continue to mean as much now that he is dead.

We ask that he go on living in his children, his family, and his friends; in their hearts and minds, in their courage and their consciences.
Anglican Prayer Book

from Rod, I have known Kees for more than 50 years, both personally and professionally, our relationship has always been cordial and fun.

our love and sympathy to the whole family, Kate Ann and Rod

Adapted from a quote from Mark Twain

“his death was like
a man’s house burning down –
it would take years and years
and years and years
to discover
all they had lost in the fire.”

Message: Dear Boys -- I worked with your Mum for many years at BGH -- both as a supervisor and co-worker. She was a top notch critical care nurse who I respected and enjoyed working with. Your Dad I knew almost as well. In my supervisory capacity, he represented me and our hospital on more than one case that went to court. He gave me a new respect for lawyers. I remember him saying --"you get more out of a witness by being kind to them." Indeed he was. He appeared so relaxed in court that it did much give me confidence and courage. I offer you my deepest sympathy. Although I was at your Mothers wake, I never met you. Kees was so gracious but his grief was visible. So sorry.

Message: We lose a good friend like Kees , who was a man of words and I can't find the words. As I watched a young Bald Eagle soar over today , I realized it was his way of telling me that he is beginning a new journey ! He will be greatly missed by so many .

Message: Dear Kees' Family,

I was privileged to have played on Queen's Golden Gaels with Kees in 1968. If Kees looks tough in his football profile, it was because he was! He was a loyal and dedicated teammate, proud of our connection with him. I managed to learn some of his post-Queen's history through a friend who knew Kees in Belleville. I miss my teammates, and at our 50th, I missed Kees' presence. We enjoyed each other's company that memorable year. Please accept my deepest sympathies and my best wishes.

Message: Kees was a wonderful, generous partner in the Firm. As others have noted, he had a great sense of humour and made our partnership meetings a good deal more fun than they would have been otherwise. He was always focused on the greater good of his colleagues and brought a refreshing practicality to his work. His deep love for his family was clear to all of us. He will be greatly missed and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.
