Walker, Iris

Iris Winifred Walker
(née Ball)

Passed away peacefully at home on
Wednesday, February 21st, 2018 in her 92nd year.

Iris was pre-deceased by her dearly beloved husband Leonard Walker after 63 years of marriage, and her parents Reginald and Edith (Fox) Ball. She is survived by her loving children Andrew Walker (Susan), Susan Wilson (Andrew) and Tina Gemmell (Reg). Doting grandma of Myra Myre (Michael), Carol Wilson (Toli), Mandy Albiez (Mark), Abigail Sutton (Steve), Victoria Walker-Paget, John Gemmell and by extension Susan Gemmell, Nancy Muller (Dennis), and Cathy Manzato (Mauro). Proud great-grandma of Carissa, Owen, Zoe, Justin, Oscar, Marlie, Malina, Pippa and Jasper. She will be missed by her dear sister Josephine Clarke (Michael), her nephew Paul Clarke (Caroline), niece Nicola Clarke and extended family and friends.

Iris was born in the old Picton Hospital and lived in Wellington until she went to England with her parents in 1937. She was a loving wife and mother, a natural teacher and a very talented artist. Her education to become an art teacher was cut short by WW2; however, after she raised her family, Iris became a teacher of children with disabilities for 10 years where her art skills greatly enhanced communications. After Iris and Len retired to Lympstone in Devon, her passion for art flourished, painting for pleasure, accepting commissions, exhibiting, teaching an art group, and belonging to the local “Group of Seven”. This continued after Iris returned to live in Canada and Wellington with Len in 2000. As well as her passion for art, she was an avid reader, enjoyed movies and music, and was a member of Women’s Institute (WI) in England and Wellington. Many will have appreciated the historical map of Wellington that Iris painted for the 100th Anniversary of the Wellington WI that is on display in the Wellington Public Library. Iris was devoted to her husband and family spread across the globe in England, Ontario, the USA, Australia, and Switzerland. Iris had a very generous spirit and nurturing nature, always putting others needs before her own. She had strong leadership qualities, always kept up with current affairs, a keen wit, wonderful smile and infectious laugh. Iris will be remembered with love, respect and admiration.

The family would like to extend special thanks to friends and exceptional caregivers Reeva Hammet, Rosemary Moore and Rhonda Gillies; Jan Colton PSW, the SELHIN/CCAC and Dr. Johannsson for their compassionate and dedicated care of Iris in her home.
