Message: When Derek moved from Belleville to Picton his daughter Nancy and her husband Tim looked after his every need. Candies in his dish, snacks in his small refrigerator, haircut drives (short) in the car, walks when Derek was able and even the odd hockey game in Wellington to see the Dukes on ice.
They were incredible caregivers! He looked so forward to visiting their home for an “over-nighter” with fun around the pool and seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Derek bragged about Nancy’s home cooked meals – fried fish, spaghetti and holiday dinners.

To the Family, keep Derek in your hearts and cherish the many, many memories of him.

Message: Hi Nancy, Sue and all the family. We were so sorry to hear about Uncle Derek passing and at same time knowing he is at peace on the dance floor and hockey rinks. Just too many memories to count at the cottage, on the harbour ice, family events, and so many more. Laurie and I were reminiscing the times when Uncle Derek would phone us while we were living in Texas. He would call just to chat and see how we were doing, updating us on the Belleville news. Those calls meant a lot to us. As I think back on all these memories and the memories of others in this condolence memorial, Uncle Derek is a real role model for all of us to follow. Thanks for all the memories, until we meet again … all our love. Jeff and Laurie Hopkins.

So sorry for the loss of Derek, these past two years we have all suffered incredibly losing loved ones of our own! To know Derek (and Jinnie and Jane) was to know a wonderful loving family who in turn brought a lot of joy to those lucky enough to have been in their circle.
One of the best memories that will stay with me forever is upon returning home from the far side of wherever and joining Derek and Jinnie for happy hour and travel stories, they were always interested in my travels and the questions were endless! Like it was yesterday I can see Jinnie with tears in her eyes ( from laughing so hard) while telling me tales of Derek at the nude beach in Australia. Of course Derek sat there with a mile wide grin adding his own version, which was even better!
RIP Derek, when you have worn Jinnie out on the dance floor, rest assured there will be another in line, keep them smiling!

Your Dad was so special and one of a kind. I am one of the lucky ones to be able to call him my Uncle. My Mom and Jinnie were sisters.
Uncle Derek was an inspiration to all who knew him . He was kind with a keen sense of humor, loyal , hard working and loved his family and friends . We are looking forward to Susie coming home so we can celebrate his life with all our fond memories. Even if we didn’t get too spend much time with him in last few years he was in our thought and prayers. Uncle Derek and Aunt Jinnie were a match made in heaven and now they are together again with Janie at their side. They are all gone now but not forgotten. Uncle Derek save a dance for me. All our love Fran & Wayne

We are very sad that your dad has passed away, especially during this pandemic.
Derek has been on my mind for over the past 2 months wishing I could visit him and yet afraid that I might be the one who brought Covid.
We had many fun times together hockey on the back ponds, swimming, hunting ducks, fishing and lots of laughs. I remember the fish fries on the stone fireplace, with loads of perch, playing horseshoes ( I was never very good). It was mostly Sunday afternoons when we would spend time together. Being the only boy in the family and Derek being the youngest of the uncles we would be like brothers. He was always a fun person and strong as a horse. I even have his last boat which I bought from him after they sold the cottage.
I also remember he and your mum taking me to a cottage for a week over at Consecon, it was at the opposite end of the long sand beech from where your parents owned their cottage it was on a point with several buildings. I do think my mother was fed up looking after me and Derek and Jenny took me with them to give her a break!!!
There was also the time when the Heards and the Goyers rented a cottage near Wellington and the cottage was a long ways from the rocky beach. Some where I have photo of grandma Fuller sitting at the front of the cottage. It was all about family, yes indeed.
Before he went into a retirement home and then long term care Brenda & I had him up to the cottage for a few days he really enjoyed himself and helped me remove two trees that fell over due to the wind.
He was a great help to my mother cutting the grass, shovelling the snow, planting flowers and being there when she needed him.
Sue are a long ways away but it does not lessen the grief. Try to reflect on the many good things that you can remember.
God bless
Love Your cousins Dave & Brenda

Message: So sorry for your loss. Derek was a wonderful man and I am sure you have many great memories. He adored his family here in Canada and in Australia and enjoyed sharing his stories, talking about them fondly and often. I too have wonderful memories sharing a drink with him on a summers day, delivering treats from Nancy that were to be shared 3but rarely were, talking Belleville old timers hockey……
Cheers to a life well lived.

Message: Dearest Nancy and Tim,Susie and Ray and family,
Derek was my uncle, and what an uncle he’s was, like a second dad. Aunt Jinnie and him were such an example to me of what a loving relationship was all about, they were my role models. Been reading a lot about his winter sports, there were many sides to this gentle Gordie Howe wanna be. I have so many memories, that just put a smile on my face of the wonderful times at our cottages at Consecon.
What summers they were, filled with fun and laughter . How he loved the beach…non stop swimming, horseshoes, badminton, fishing renowned fish fries, and the daily race to beat my dad at combing the beach for bottles left behind on the beach and of course the humiliation for we kids to have the embarrassment of helping…we all became great beach combers.
He was an amazing husband and father to his girls, and were so lucky to have this special man in our lives. He’ll be riding around heaven
with the love of his life Jinnie, and Janie will right there with him.
RIP uncle Derek.
Hugs
Jeanett and George
