In memory of: Kees Kort
Message: Kees and I rowed together in Brockville in the late 60s early 70s. One year I was bow seat in a junior men’s heavy weight eight. Kees was in five seat. I was a scrawny lightweight; he was a muscular Queen’s football lineman. I recall Kees playing a practical joke on me which I did not take kindly to. I picked up a 2 x 4 threw it and hit him in the ankles at which point he grabEd me a bear hug, walked to the end of the dock and jumped in with me. I thought I was dead. I swam to the bottom of the St. Lawrence River as far away from him as I could before I had to surface. When I surfaced he was laughing at me. We were the best friends ever since. Many years later when the company for which I worked was being unionized Kees was hired as our lawyer. Watching him in action was like watching a Jimmy Hoffa movie. He could growl and cuss with the best of them. It was a good act. Many years after that I had occasion to hire Kees on a personal labour matter. Rest in peace my Friend.

Message: Kees and I litigated against one another in the labour and employment law fields off and on over the years. It was always a pleasure and and an honour to work with him. Super smart, common sense, fair and reasonable - and funny.

So sorry for your loss - and our loss too.

It was an honor and privilege to have known Kees on a personal and professional level. We share many laughs and worked through numerous files together during my time in local government. Kees will always be in my memories and I'm glad to have known such an amazing mind and man as he!

Message: I'm so sorry to hear of Kees' passing. I joined Hicks Morley in 2001 and had many conversations with Kees over the years, mostly by telephone when he needed a "pension" question answered as he worked through a file, so it is his distinct voice I remember best. He was always so kind to me, even gentle, and yes, definitely humble, even when speaking to a very junior lawyer. I've missed him in his retirement and am saddened to learn we won't see him at future firm events for one more conversation. My sympathies to Kees' family and close friends. He will be missed.

Message: I had the honour of calling Kees my partner for decades. He was a humble, bright, funny, practical and dedicated partner. He cared about the personal and the business sides of the practice of law. He mentored the young lawyers, he set a great example for them, he serviced the clients well and he was respected by the profession. Arbitrators, union lawyers, his clients and his colleagues at the firm all spoke very highly of him. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his children and their families.

Message: So very sorry to learn of the passing of a long-term business and personal friend. I am truly saddened to hear of his passing since he and I shared many business and social events together. He was the consummate gentleman when dealing with clients and was treated with professionalism by those he opposed at meetings/hearings, etc.
When I would represent his firm's clients at grievance and arbitration hearings there wasn't an arbitrator who did not convey to me the respect they had for the manner in which Kees handled himself at hearings. He will be a great loss to the employment law community. Rest is peace Kees. You deserve it.
